Owl's Roost

Wearable Art - Jewelry

Guest Artist @ Birdsong Studio , 5 Sixth Avenue, Betterton, MD 21610

Joy's fun "infinity" bracelets and necklaces are inspired by the colors and textures of combinations of glass, shell, crystal, porcelain and silver plated tube beads and charms. These are strung using a strong .8 mm elastic cord. Joy's wearable art is easy to wear, no clasps to struggle with. Stretch it on and it goes "round and round". Her popular bracelet/necklace can be triple wrapped as a bracelet or simply worn as a necklace. Earrings and kids jewelry are also available.

Rick Bisgyer Porcelain

Pottery

321 Ericsson Ave. Betterton, MD 21610

Working in porcelain I create wheel thrown vessels inspired by the graceful curves of sails and hulls, and the ever-changing character of wind over water. Porcelain is the most demanding of all clay bodies and my extreme shapes are a constant challenge, yet a feeling of effortlessness and serenity is conveyed through these pieces. My glaze colors evoke the sea and sky as they change through the day, giving a sense of upward movement that complements the narrow based, broad shouldered forms.

Fredy Granillo is a Chestertown based artist from the tiny and turbulent country of El Salvador, Central America. He has been painting "Talavera" style pottery since he was 11 years old, and he later studied visual arts and ceramics at the Salvadoran National University. His exploration of this traditional decorative style has evolved and flourished since his transition to the United States. His brand "Pajarito" or little bird, is a nod to the resilience of his people who practice grace and ingenuity to survive each day.

23441 Cacaway Farm Lane, Chestertown, MD 21620

I draw and paint in graphite, Prismacolor pencil, acrylic, and oil. I am inspired by the overt beauty found in the world along with the collateral, or unintended, beauty life reveals to us when we’re bold enough to look. Persistent subjects and themes in my work are birch trees, oysters, Canada geese, and more recently, capturing the strength and beauty of our differences in a climate of deep racial, political, and moral divide.

My painting is inspired by the ancient tradition of brush painting, created by grinding ink stick with ink stone, with the use of bamboo handled brushes and rice paper. my subjects are found in nature, often viewed from my waterfront studio window, a feast of birds, eagles, and ever changing tides. Metal

I’m an artist, a maker, printmaker, blacksmith and teacher. My portfolio ranges from sculptural steel structures both large and small, assemblages made with found objects, outdoor installations, forged functional objects and works on paper. My creative process is driven by investigation and research; though my primary medium is metal, I’m fascinated by cellular structures and articulated mechanisms, all metaphors for human form and feeling.

Our art is about how we see nature and how we understand our place within it. We draw inspiration from our immediate environment and from folklore and archetypal motifs that reflect how people have traditionally approached their relationship with the earth. Working in a kind of collaboration with nature, we allow each artwork to arise from curiosity about a certain natural phenomenon, perhaps a lost feather, bleached bone, gesture of a sprouting plant, pattern in the river’s waves, or slowly decaying tree. Making gentle alterations that focus the eye and the mind, we work to honor its patterns and processes and its role in the larger environment. We work in various mediums, including painting, drawing and photography, but focus primarily on natural materials such as branches, vines, oyster shells, stones, bones, and feathers. Most of our works are large, site-specific outdoor sculptures, however our studio work includes smaller sculptures, drawings, paintings, poems, and artist’s books usually incorporating natural materials.

Kevin's highly original work is painted on glass, from behind with acrylics and other mediums.

“This is what God led me to, and me saying thank you to God.  I use acrylic latex with other mediums on glass, painting blind from the back of the glass. I started pencil drawing in the seventh grade. Painting came later. God and recovery is why I got back into painting on glass after 30 years."

I create sculptures in stainless steel, wood and found objects.  Most of my major public works have been stainless steel horses. After years of working with other materials which require varying degrees of maintenance to retain their pristine looks and survival, stainless seems to be the material of choice. The artistic challenge is to take a heavy, lifeless material, unlike wood, and evoke a sense lightness and movement. Many of the wood sculptures use branches from trees I have known. With all my work, there is an environmental consciousness.

20 First Avenue, Betterton, MD 21610

My charcoal and ink drawings owe much to the process of how they are made. Far from that of the action painters of the 1950’s, mine is a very slow process of mark making, one in which I often rotate the drawing, as I add layer upon layer of freely drawn lines. No drawing starts with a specific idea, but is developed intuitively as I watch, look and respond to what I see. Drawings often sit for months waiting for the next layer of lines. As a result, they might best be called “non-action or slow-action drawings”. Whatever the case, I hope they provide an invitation to yet another way of looking at our place in the world.
